Threats Fail to Thwart Anti-Hun Sen Protest
With Cambodian-American protesters sequestered on a street away from the Sunnylands resort in southern California, Prime Minister Hun Sen greeted U.S. President Barack Obama and posed for a handshake free from harassment on Monday before the start of a two-day U.S.-Asean summit.
The protest, organized by the Cambodia-America Alliance, an activist group based in North Carolina, went ahead following weeks of buildup during which supporters of the ruling CPP warned of a violent response if the demonstration took place.
Sihanoukville Beach Businesses Given a Month To Move Out
All bars, restaurants and guesthouses along O’Tres Beach near Sihanoukville, and some on neighboring O’Chheuteal Beach, must close up shop within a month or face forced eviction, local officials confirmed on Tuesday.
According to a statement dated February 12 and signed by Preah Sihanouk provincial governor Yon Min, businesses on O’Tres and those on the southern end of O’Chheuteal have until March 13 to move out, citing environmental concerns.
TV9 Reporter Sues Military Police Commander Over Arrest
A television journalist who was briefly detained by military police in Mondulkiri province last week said on Tuesday that he had filed a court complaint against the commander who ordered his arrest.
The incident was sparked by a segment aired by national broadcaster TV9 on Wednesday last week, which alleged that provincial military police commander Sak Sarang was taking bribes from illegal loggers inside the Seima Biodiversity Conservation Area. The segment was based on a report by TV9’s correspondent in the eastern province, Vann Tith.
After Verdict, Tycoon’s Bodyguard Still at Large
As real estate mogul Sok Bun kicked, stomped on and dragged popular television presenter Ek Socheata across the floor of a Phnom Penh restaurant in July, the businessman’s personal bodyguard kept his pistol drawn, occasionally pointing it at the entertainer.
Mr. Bun was found guilty of intentional violence with aggravating circumstances on Monday, but saw his three-year prison sentence suspended to just 10 months.
Appeal Hearings Get Underway at Khmer Rouge Tribunal
With appeal proceedings finally getting underway at the Khmer Rouge tribunal on Tuesday, prosecutors rejected claims from the defense teams for Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan that their clients had been at the center of a show trial meant only to find them guilty.
On the first day of scheduled hearings in November, proceedings were postponed following a walkout by Nuon Chea and his team.
$13k Stolen in Latest Holdup Of Wing Kiosk
Police in Kompong Thom province are searching for three men who held up the owners of a Wing mobile payment kiosk in Kompong Svay district on Monday night, the latest in a string of similar robberies.
District police chief Khan Chan Kor said Tuesday that the thieves entered the house where the kiosk was located at about 8 p.m. armed with an AK-47 assault rifle, a handgun and an iron bar, then threatened to kill the couple and their children if they did not hand over their money.
Indian Man Arrested, Released Over Deadly Crash in Kampot
An Indian expatriate was arrested in Kampot province on Monday after rear-ending a motorbike with his car and killing its passenger but was released Tuesday morning after authorities determined that the accident was not entirely his fault, officials said.
The incident occurred on National Road 3 in Chhouk district at about 12:30 p.m. when Indian national Amit Gandhi, 44, collided with Sar Run, 58, and his relative Sun Ney, 46, as they attempted to turn left off the highway without signaling, according to deputy district police chief Nak El. Mr. Run owned the motorbike and had been driving, he said.
Prey Veng Student Stabbed to Death After Football Dispute
A high school student in Prey Veng province was stabbed to death with a rifle bayonet by another student on Monday, following an argument during a football game about two weeks ago, police and school officials said on Tuesday.
The suspect, Ly Sothirak, 18, was arrested at a relative’s house on Tuesday morning after investigators interviewed witnesses at the Bun Rany Hun Sen Prey Poun High School in Kompong Trabek district, where the fatal attack occurred, according to deputy provincial police chief Seng Sopheak.
Mondolkiri Police Chief Orders Manhunt Despite Protests
Mondolkiri provincial police chief Toch Yon has ordered authorities in Keo Seima district to search for fugitive former military police official Sou Marith, after the district police chief said last week that he would not organize a manhunt without further funding.
Mr. Marith, 37, is wanted for two separate incidents involving the unlawful use of a firearm.
